Skytrain extension ticket down to B10

The fare for onward travel to the six BTS stations between On Nut and Bearing has been cut from 15 baht to 10 baht, effective today, Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said on Friday.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration officially launched the 5.25km extended route on Aug 12, 2011. It currently provides around 100,000 trips on weekdays and 70,000 trips on weekends.

MR Sukhumbhand visited Bearing station on Friday and declared he had implemented his election promise to take action on fares "immediately", a pledge made during the campaign that saw him re-elected to office on March 2.

He also visited Siam station to inspect progress in the installation of platform screen doors.

The Bangkok Transit System, which has a concession from city hall to operate the BTS skytrain, will install platform doors at eight high-traffic stations, with the work due for completion this year. The company has hired a Singapore firm to do the job at a cost of 600 million baht.

The new safety doors are intended to ensure that passengers waiting on the platform do not fall onto the track. The train doors will not open if they are not properly aligned with the safety doors. A similar system has long been been operative at MRT underground stations.
