B200m drug bust in Chiang Rai

Police arrested four drug suspects and seized 600,000 methamphetamine pills, or yaba in Chiang Rai on Sunday morning.

Pol Lt-Gen Chaiwat Chotima, chief of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau, said the suspects arrested were three Hmong tribesmen - Li Sae-ma, 60, Kitar Sae-yang, 34, and Silawat Archawattanakul, 23 - and Witthawat Lae-saw, 23, from the Akha tribe.

Mr Li is a former member of Tambon Kirirat Administration Organisation in Tak province.

Police seized 600,000 yaba pills, with an estimated street value of 200 million baht, and three pickup trucks.

The suspects were caught at a traffic checkpoint in Chiang Rai province.

They admitted that they were hired for one million baht to transport the drugs from Chiang Rai to Bangkok.

The tribesmen told police that they spent a night at a hotel near the Chiang Rai Provincial Police Division before travelling the next morning.
