The blast occurred in front of soi Ramkhamhaeng 43/1 near a beauty salon and shattered at least two roadside stalls and storefronts.
The device was suspected to be a home-made bomb as police found nails among the debris strewn on the pavement.
Pol Lt Sanoe Pongsuth, an investigator at Hua Mark police station, said the explosion took place about 8.30 pm.
The bomb was apparently hidden inside a black plastic bag that was placed in a garbage bin.
A group of people who were walking near the explosion site were injured.
"It is certainly a bombing because nails are scattered around the explosion site," he said.
Of the injured, two were said to be in a serious condition. Rescue workers took the wounded to hospital _ three to Vejthani Hospital and the rest to Ramkhamhaeng Hospital.
Warit, a clothes vendor whose stall was 10 metres from the blast site, said the bomb was probably planted in a garbage bin between the beauty salon and Bangkok Bank. "I heard one big explosion and rushed to see what was going on. Many people were hurt. I think I smelled gun powder," he said.
