Kittiratt faces impeachment bid over pensions

The Democrats are to launch an impeachment bid against Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong for not setting up a pension fund for casual workers.

Mr Kittiratt had failed to adhere to the 2011 National Savings Fund Act which stipulates that a pension fund be set up, Democrat Party deputy spokesman Atthawit Suwanpakdi said yesterday.

The fund would serve as a savings pool for around 27 million casual workers.

These workers are not officially hired by companies and so have limited access to labour protection and welfare.

The law requires the government to inject seed money of 1 billion baht into the fund; however, only 725 million baht had been allocated so far.

Mr Atthawit said his party would launch the impeachment bid against Mr Kittiratt this week.
