Lenovo, based in China, feels the new sector will find new revenues to offset the declining computer market.

Thailand is the second largest smartphone market in Asean after Indonesia.

Jeerawut Wongpimonporn, country general manager of Lenovo Thailand, said company headquarters is ready to expand smartphone sales to markets outside China.

“We will focus more on smartphones and tablets as our future growth opportunity,” Mr Jeerawut said. The company's marketing includes promoting the smart devices as enhancements to PCs for consumers.

In Asean, Lenovo first launched its smartphone brand in Indonesia. Thailand and Malaysia are the next markets.

In Thailand, the company introduced four series in five models with price ranging from 3,000 to 17,000 baht.

IDC Thailand, the local arm of the global research firm, predicted the overall mobile phone market this year will sell about 20 million units, with 8 million sales of smartphones and another 4 million tablets.

“At this stage, it is hard to predict sales expectation, as its needs to see consumer perception,” he said.

However, Lenova aims for a 10% share of smartphone and tablet sales in Thailand this year.
