BA plunges into Bangkok Airways codeshare pool

British Airways (BA) has signed an accord with Bangkok Airways (PG) to feed its long-haul passengers to Thai holiday hotspots on routes operated by the Thai carrier.

The codeshare arrangement means BA passengers can continue their journeys from Bangkok - BA's sole Thai port of call - to Phuket, Koh Samui and Chiang Mai. The agreement, effective from Tuesday, also covers PG's Singapore-Koh Samui service.

It allows BA passengers to book flights to those Thai tourist destinations in one seamless transaction on www.ba.com.

BA has become the 11th international airline in the codeshare pool of PG which has strenuously pursued such partnership arrangements to boost passenger volume on its domestic networks.

On May 15 PG took Qatar Airways on board its codeshare pool under which the Doha-based airline transfers its passengers on onward flights from Bangkok to Koh Samui, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Trat, Sukhothai, Lampang, Krabi, Phnom Penh and Yangon which are operated by PG.

Peter Wiesner, PG's senior vice president for network management, told the Bangkok Post yesterday a few international airlines are expected to join PG as codeshare partners later this year under discussions currently underway.

Those already in the pool include Air France, Airberlin, Etihad Airways, EVA Air, Finnair, Japan Airlines, KLM, Malaysia Airlines and SilkAir.

BA, which has been flying to Thailand for over 80 years, flies daily to Bangkok and twice daily to Singapore.

PG serves a network of 20 destinations with a fleet of 22 aircraft.

BA's head of alliances Steve Ronald said the Thai holiday hotspots will be more accessible to European tourists as a result of the BA-PG partnership.
