Rubber tapper slain in Narathiwat

A rubber tapper was killed in a drive-by shooting in Sukirin district of Narathiwat province early Wednesday morning, police said.

Pol Col Jongjairak Kongphao, chief of Sukirin police station, said he received a report of a shooting on a bridge at Ban Lubohlasoh, tambon Romsai at about 6am.

He led a joint police and military force to the scene and found the body of Jehmasoh Yeemayee, 32, a resident of the village, lying on the bridge. Police also found ten spent cartridges scattered on the ground.

According to witnesses, Jehsamoh was travelling on his motorcycle heading to his rubber plantation when a man riding pillion on another motorcycle fired at him with a pistol. The attackers then fled.

Jehsamoh took six bullets in the head, chest and body and died on the spot.

Police blamed separatist militants.
