Profit-taking, jitters over Fed meet hit SET

Thai stocks yesterday tumbled 2.97%, or 43.62 points, on profit-taking after their recent sharp rise and ahead of the Fed's much-anticipated two-day meeting.Sales by foreign investors also weighed on market sentiment.

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) Index, which of late has been the worst performer among its regional peers, rose in the morning session to a high for the day just shy of the 1,500-psychological level before profit-taking in the afternoon cancelled out the early gains.

The main gauge closed at 1,472.42 with heavy trade of 61.65 billion baht.

"I don't see any reason for the market's fall today, except profit-taking," CIMB Securities (Thailand) vice-president Teerawut Kanniphakul said.
