Family puts questions to police

The family of slain businessman Akeyuth Anchanbutr says there are 13 unanswered questions surrounding his murder which police need to investigate further.

The family's lawyer, Suwat Apaipak, said he handed the list of questions to Metropolitan Police Bureau commissioner Khamronwit Thoopkrachang and urged police to address them before wrapping up the investigation.

Mr Suwat said the questions raised by the family are intended to help solve the mystery regarding the motive and the number of people involved in the killing.

According to Mr Suwat, the family remains unconvinced the motive was robbery since the suspects threw away everything Akeyuth held of value, including a Rolex watch and a gold necklace with an amulet with an estimated value of 20 million baht.

He said the family also wants police to retrieve footage from surveillance cameras at various places related to the crime, the phone records of driver Santiphap Pengduang before and during the kidnapping, and Akeyuth's clothes.

He said other things to be investigated include the reported sighting of a group of men in front of the Pradipat Hotel on the night of the kidnapping, Akeyuth's missing suitcase, and a re-examination of Akeyuth's body for signs of torture.

"Those 13 questions, when answered, will tell us if Akeyuth's murder was for money or an attempt to make it look like it was," Mr Suwat said.

Pol Lt Gen Khamronwit said yesterday police will conduct further investigations as requested by the family. Some of their questions bother police too, he said.

"I think there should be some progress within a week. We will keep the family and the lawyer informed if anything arises," he said.

Pol Lt Gen Khamronwit said Akeyuth would probably still be alive had the family picked up on the clues left prior to his death that something was wrong.

"At this point I really don't want to say 'if they had done so'. But if we were alerted, he would still be alive. The case is straightforward," he said. Akeyuth was abducted on June 6 and contact was lost with his family after he withdrew 5 million baht from a bank the next day.

In the week that followed, two suspects _ Mr Santiphap and Sutthipong Pimpisarn _ were detained and admitted their involvement in the killing. Two other suspects _ Chaowalit Woonchum and Thiwakorn Kuathong _ were detained for allegedly helping to bury Akeyuth at Jingjo mountain in Phatthalung's muang district.
