Rights execs get pay hike

The cabinet yesterday approved a rise in monthly salaries and allowances for National Human Rights commissioners.

The royal decree will mean a 6% pay boost for the commissioners, government spokesman Teerat Ratanasevi said after the cabinet meeting yesterday.

The decree requires a royal signature before it can take effect.

A cabinet source said the proposal was subjected to a heated debate before it was eventually approved.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung strongly supported the decree, while Deputy Prime Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi objected to it.

Each commissioner currently receives a monthly salary in excess of 100,000 baht.

The cabinet also approved another decree to provide members and the chairman of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) with the same travel allowance as cabinet ministers, Mr Teerat said.

The NBTC had previously sought to be paid a travel allowance on par with the prime minister, but the proposal was rejected.
