UPDATE: Wanted militant killed

A leading militant wanted under an arrest warrant was killed in a clash with a government force in Yala's Raman district on Thursday, police said.

He was identified as Madari Taye, 42. A warrant was issued by Kapho district police and approved by the Pattani Court for his arrest on Aug 17, 2011.

Madari is on police record as a leading member of an RKK separatist group led by Masawi Kama. The group killed four rangers and set fire to them following an ambush in tambon Jakua of Raman district in Yala province in 2005, police said.

About 8am on Thursday a combined team of provincial police and soldiers of Yala Task Force 12 moved in on Ae Kaeng village in tambon Kaero on information that Madari was hiding there.

As the government force was approaching the village, the militants opened fire and the clash followed.

The militants managed to break through the siege.

Pol Sgt Preecha Thinchana, 34, was shot in the right cheek and seriously wounded. L/Cpl Varapol Thorarit, 30, of the Yala Task Force 12, was hit in the left hip.

Both were rushed to Yala Hospital. Pol Sgt Preecha was later referred to Prince of Songkla Hospital in Hat Yai district.

Police said Madari's body was later found by security forces combing the area. An AK47 rifle and an 11mm pistol were found beside his body.
