Teenager Ratchanok Intanon met her season target of a top-three spot while veteran Boonsak Ponsana moved up to a career-best fourth in the latest world badminton rankings published on Thursday.
Ratchanok, 18, climbed from fifth although she has missed two consecutive big events - this week's Singapore Open and last week's Indonesia Open.
The young star is now behind only top-ranked Chinese Li Xuerui and Germany's Juliane Schenk.
"I am glad to have reached my goal so early," said Ratchanok.
The Yasothorn native has had an impressive season with wins at the India Open and the Thailand Open. She also finished runner-up at the All-England Championships and the Swiss Open.
"My ultimate goal is to be the world number one," said Ratchanok who started the year at No.9.
"But this is not possible this year because I am still well behind Li."
Her manager Kamala Thongkorn said Ratchanok could reach No.2 in the world by the end of the year if she continues her good form.
Four other Thai women are in the top 20 - Porntip Buranaprasertsuk (15), Nichaon Jindapon (16), Busanan Ongbumrungpan (17) and Sapsiri Taerattanachai (20).
Boonsak's move up the ladder was helped by his performance at last week's Indonesia Open where he lost to eventual champion and world No.1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in the quarter-finals.
