It may not have been popular with a lot of cinema critics, but the recently released film adaptation by Australian director Baz Luhrmann of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby did at least introduce the uninitiated to the glamorous fashion of flappers and their beaux during the so-called Jazz Age in which the novel was set.

Leonardo Dicaprio, in the title role, gave us an impeccably groomed man-about-town who could call on the resources of a massive wardrobe, while Tobey Maguire, as Yale graduate Nick Caraway, sported an unfailingly neat, preppy style. Carey Mulligan stunned and enchanted as the heroine, Daisy Buchanan.
