Court dismisses Chavanont lawsuit

The Criminal Court on Monday dismissed a defamation lawsuit filed by Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul against Democrat Party spokesman Chavanont Intarakomalyasut.

Mr Surapong had accused Mr Chavanont of defaming him by giving an interview in which he said that a "certain politician" once knelt down before Thaksin Shinawatra asking the former prime minister to withdraw a lawsuit against him.

Mr Chavanont also told the interview said that the "certain politician" worked only for the interests of the Pheu Thai Party, and criticised the un-named man for giving Thaksin his passport back.

Mr Surapong said Mr Chavanont had damaged his reputation by making the comments, which he believed to be about him.

But the court stated that Mr Chavanont never specified who the politician was, and that his mentioning of the return of Thaksin's passport was an honest criticism.

Therefore, the court decided to dismiss the lawsuit.
