Sukhumvit Soi 50 hit by flood

Sukhumvit Soi 50 hit by flood

Soi 50 Sukhumvit was flooded late Monday night by water overflow from the Chao Phraya River that broke through the anti-flood embankment.

The water level in the Chao Phraya River rose to 1.9 metres above sea level during a high tide, pushing up Khlong Phra Khanong, and overflowing a 1.6-metre embankment of sandbags, Deputy Bangkok Governor Sanya Cheenimit told INN News Agency. It quickly flooded the soi, and inundated homes.

The flood was first reported at 8.30pm, with water reaching knee level in some areas. The soi was reportedly impassable for motorcycles and small cars.

About 100 volunteers and rescue workers pilied sandbags to increase the height of the embankment and pumped out the floodwater.

Authorities were able to contain the situation around 11pm, but only after tide level began to recede, Mr Sanya said.

The embankment was temporarily built with sandbags and was awaiting the construction of permanent concrete embankment, he added.

A resident said the permanent concrete embankment should have been built after the 2011 "great flood", but contractors had left the job without finishing.
