French want easier access to airspace

French operators of private airlines have asked the government to change its rules regarding planes flying through Thai airspace.

Under current rules, airlines must submit requests to enter Thai airspace seven days in advance. The French firms want this reduced to one day.

Transport Minister Chadchat Sittipunt said Wednesday the airlines want the Department of Civil Aviation to adopt the same one-day request format used by other Asian nations.

The department's director-general Woradech Harnprasertkul said he is considering the request. However, an immediate change to the rule would be impossible.

The department will have to discuss the change with the air force, he said.

While the current rule requires seven days' notice, the processing of requests can take from half a day up to three days, Mr Woradech said.
