Mother dies, son injured in Yala attack

YALA ― A mother was killed and her two-year-old baby boy injured in a drive-by shooting by suspected insurgents in Muang district late on Thursday afternoon

Suhainee Longsa, 37, was travelling on motorcycle with her two sons ― one aged 13 and the other 2 ― on a village road in tambon Kortor Tua Ra at about 4.30pm when the incident took place at about 4.30pm. Two men drove alongside her vehicle on a motorbike and the pillion passenger shot them.

Suhainee died on the spot while her two-year-old son, Sofron Kwansook, was hit in the left shoulder, Pol Capt Roussadee Kado, duty officer at Muang Yala police station, said.

The baby was rushed to Yala Hospital and was out of danger, hospital officials said.

The woman’s older son escaped unharmed. He was found sitting beside the body of his mother, crying, when security officers and a paramedic team arrived at the scene.

Police are investigating whether the southern insurgency or a personal conflict was the motive for the shooting.
