Lao woman, son arrested in drug bust

A Lao woman and her 17-year-old son were arrested on Thursday with 222,000 methamphetamine pills in Muang district of Nong Khai province, metropolitan police said at a press conference on Friday.

Pol Maj Gen Parinya Chansuriya, a deputy metropolitan police chief, said the arrests were made on information from police detectives of Metropolitan Police Division 4.

He said police laid in wait at the parking area of the Tesco Lotus department store in Muang district on Thursday.

When a Nissan car which matched the description given by the detective arrived shortly after noon, they converged on and a search found 222,000 methamphetamine pills hidden in a false compartment under the back seat.

A Lao woman identified only as Phromma, 46, and her son with her in the car were arrested and charged with have illicit drugs in possession with intent to sell.

The two said they were hired for 20,000 baht to deliver the drugs across the border to Nong Khai.  The drugs were destined for distribution in Bang Na and Prawet districts of Bangkok and Samut Prakan province.

They said the drugs were intially delivered from an area in northern Thailand on the Thai-Myanmar border to Laos before being brought into Thailand again via the Thai-Lao friendship bridge, police said.
