Defence deputy denies thaksin tape

Deputy Defence Minister Gen Yutthasak Sasiprapa denies that his voice can be heard in an audio clip circulating in social media networks that some say features him speaking to Thaksin Shinawatra.

Gen Yutthasak said he was ready to prove that it wasn't his voice in the clip. "Let's play the clip tomorrow to see if it was my or former premier Thaksin's voice," he said.

The two men in the clip discussed wresting control of the military and changing contentious laws, including defence regulations pertaining to the reshuffle of armed forces personnel.

The man who social media users say sounds like Thaksin discusses the best way to bring him home.

"The voice in the clip definitely wasn't mine," Gen Yutthasak said.

The men in the clip reference a major explosion in the deep South that killed several soldiers. That could have been a reference to a roadside bomb attack in Pattani on June 23 in which an army major was killed and five soldiers wounded.

He also denied having met Thaksin in Singapore which the former prime minister reportedly visited recently.

Gen Yutthasak said he was in Switzerland then and returned to Thailand before attending the swearing-in ceremony for the new cabinet late last month.

He said the clip was being circulated by ill intentioned people who do not want him to work at the Defence Ministry.
