Somjai Laochot was shocked, because her monthly water bill is usually around 800-900 baht.
Mrs Somjai said she lives alone in the house, where she previously produced rice noodles for wholesale before closing down the business about a year ago.
The woman said her water meter was taken away by the Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA) in the district of Ratchaburi province in June because she was away from home during that period.
She paid her overdue water bill at the beginning of July, after she returned, and the meter was reinstalled.
A PWA employee visited her last Wednesday and warned her that she had been using a large amount of water over the past several days, Mrs Somjai said. She then checked with the PWA and was informed of the huge bill.
She almost collapsed on the spot, she said, and was so stressed out she had to make several visits to a temple visits to keep calm.
Somnuek Taettun, chief of the PWA in Ban Pong, admitted that the agency had made a mistake. He said the staff who reinstalled the water meter forgot to reset the counter.
He said the problem was fixed and the Mrs Somjai's correct water bill for July 2-10 will be paid by the agency as compensation.
