Samui man kills one officer, stabs another

SURAT THANI: A police officer was shot and killed and another stabbed and seriously wounded by a man police say was apparently under the influence of drugs who went berserk in Koh Samui district yesterday.

The man, identified by police as Kosit Chaipet, 25, was captured at his house in tambon Borput yesterday.

Police said he shot and killed Pol Sen Sgt Maj Thanawat Choosom and stabbed and wounded Pol Sgt Maj Pornthep Pongsanuwat earlier in the morning.

The two officers received a complaint that Mr Kosit had entered a local petrol station and threatened the pump attendants with a knife.

He appeared unable to control himself as he was seen wielding the knife and walking around the station. Pol Sen Sgt Maj Thanawat and Pol Sgt Maj Pornthep arrived at the scene and tried to restrain the man.

Mr Kosit stabbed Pol Sen Sgt Maj Thanawat in the abdomen with the knife and grabbed his pistol. He then shot the officer three times, killing him instantly.

The man also fired multiple shots at bystanders at the petrol station. However, no one was hurt. He ran home after throwing away the gun.

Pol Sgt Maj Pornthep followed the attacker home. During his attempt to capture Mr Kosit, the man stabbed him in the chest. The officer was rushed to hospital and was in a serious condition.

Police reinforcements surrounded the house and arrested Mr Kosit. He has been charged with murder, obstructing officials and carrying a weapon in public.
