Temple flooded with abandoned pets

PRACHIN BURI — The abbot of a temple in Kabin Buri district that has been flooded with abandoned animals, including a wild boar and several snakes, is asking for help from the authorities, saying he cannot keep up with the cost of feeding the animals.

Wat Pah Pawana Dhamme in Moo 2 of tambon Lat Takian is currently home to a wild boar, four monkeys, three pythons, three tortoises, almost a dozen rabbits, 50 cats and dozens of dogs.

Phra Kanchit Khanti Dhammo, the abbot, said on Monday many pet owners had abandoned their animals on the temple grounds in recent years. Some asked to leave them temporarily, but never returned to collect them.

Phra Kanchit said the temple had been taking care of the animals for several years, but now has difficulties buying food for them because of a lack of money. The pythons and the boar, in particular, were growing fast and eating a lot more.

He asked local reporters to approach wildlife and animal agencies and ask if they would provide assistance for  the domesticated animals and release the wildlife back to the forest.

“Pet owners keep coming here and asking if they can leave their animals here. I have a hard time refusing them. So I try to raise all of them," the abbot said

“But I also have to take care of about 50 monks, nuns and other Buddhist practitioners. There have not been many donations lately so we need help,” Phra Kanchit  said.
