Three held with fake US dollars

Two Cameroon men and one New Zealand woman were arrested on Wednesday and charged with possessing and selling counterfeit US$100 bank notes.

Jules Kongne, 40, Francois Mbengue, 34 - both from the African country - and Karen Moran, 50, from New Zealand were caught while delivering the fake US banknotes, each worth about 3,100 baht, to police.

Naiyawat Padermchit, chief of the Metropolitan Police Bureau's Division 4, said police worked on a tip-off from an informant that the three were selling fake US banknotes, and intervened to take a delivery of counterfeit dollars at a room of Metro Point Bangkok Hotel in Bank Kapi district, he said.

The three were rounded up with 348 fake US banknotes, with a face value of $34,800, or 1.08 million baht. Other items including paper used to print the forgeries were also seized, Pol Maj Gen Naiyawat said.

The three allegedly confessed that they were faking the greenbacks to sell to Thai buyers, he added.
