Senior monk defrocked over rape

A senior monk of Wat Bang Bua in Bang Khen district has been arrested and defrocked for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl.

Sanan Khamseedang, 64, formerly known as Phra Maha Sanan Kitipattho, was arrested on Saturday at Wat Thung Ruang Thong in tambon Thung Ruang Thong of Phayao's Chun district.

He was presented at a press conference in Bangkok by Social Development and Human Security Minister Pavena Hongsakula and Pol Col Chayuth Marayat, the Bang Khen police chief.

Pol Col Chayuth said a warrant was issued for the monk's arrest on June 21.

Mr Sanan fled to a temple in Phayao after he raped the girl at Bang Bua, Pol Col Chayuth said.

The girl’s mother had earlier sought help from the Pavena Foundation. He daughter alleged the monk  had raped her twice, in April and May, when she went to his living quarters to receive food.

She said she decided to tell her mother because she feared she was pregnant, Pol Col Chayuth said.

The former monk admitted to raping the girl and claimed to have been drunk at the time, he said.
