Prison warder caught with SIM cards

RATCHABURI - A warder at Khao Bin prison has been arrested for allegedly smuggling two SIM cards, which are prohibited items, into the facility’s maximum security zone.

Maethee Chantakul was found to have the SIM cards in his shirt pocket when he was searched before starting his shift in the Zone 9, a special restricted area for deathrow and high-profile prisoners, including those convicted of serious drug offences, at 4.30pm on Sunday, prison commander Thanawee Prawat said on Monday.

Authorities later searched Mr Maethee’s home and found another 16 SIM cards on his desk.

Mr Maethee claimed he did not own them. He was taken to Ratchaburi Muang police station where police charged him with delivering prohibited items into prison and abuse of authority.

Police have not said who Mr Maethee intended to give the SIM cards to, or who hired him to smuggle them into the prison.

All prison staff are searched before starting work, Mr Thanawee said. An investigation is underway to find out if any others were involved in the failed smuggling attempt, he added.
