Five people were injured in four attacks in the southern border province of Yala on Wednesday morning.

In Yala's Yaha district, a field soldier lost his left leg in a roadside bombing while on patrol on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said the injured soldier was identified as Sgt Paradorn Petjutha. He was taken to Yala hospital.

According to a police investigation, the improvised explosive device, weighing approximately seven kilogrammes, went off when Sgt Paradorn and a group of eight field soldiers were patrolling on Yaha-La Air road at about 2pm.

Bannang Sata police radio station reported that Pitak Phrommet, a defence volunteer, was injured when a bomb went off inside Ban Taopoon school grounds about 10.25am. He was rushed to hospital.

The bomb, weighing an estimated three kilogrammes, was hidden under a table near the school fence. It was triggered by remote control. The blast left a hole about a metre wide and 80cm deep.

According to witnesses, the bomb went off as the defence volunteer approached the table.

Witnesses told police that Ma-ali Sama-air, 46, and his wife Maena were walking to tap rubber at their plantation near the village when gunmen hiding in a roadside forest fired on them with handguns.
