Introducing... the wines and cuisine of Canada

SOCIAL & LIFESTYLE

To mark Canadian National Day, which was celebrated on July 1, the Canadian embassy is organising events from Aug 6 to 15 to promote food and wine from the country. With its extensive Atlantic and Pacific coastlines, its diversity of landscapes and its multi-ethnic culinary culture, Canada offers an interesting cuisine, while many of its wines rival the best to be had from the New World. Its French-Canadian gourmet tradition is complemented by British-Canadian classics while the North American Indian heritage extends the list of enriching possibilities with wild game, vegetables and herbs. Meanwhile, prime surf, turf and farm produce inspire gourmet dining on the epic scale that Canada's vastness naturally inspires.

A selection fruit for which Canada is justly famous.

One of the highlights of the promotion promises to be a series of five Canadian-themed wine dinners, starting on Aug 6, at the Plaza Athenee's Reflexions restaurant whose chef, Daniel Bucher, has created a decadent, six-course, set-menu dinner offering the very best of Canadian food and wine. Each course will highlight the unique flavour combinations of British, French and North American Indian cuisine that characterise epicurean Canadian fare. Fresh Canadian produce will be coupled with a broad selection of Canadian seafood and agricultural products, ranging from oysters and snow crab to Arctic char and tender bison.

The food selection will be artfully paired with selected, exclusive Canadian wines, notably Mission Hill Family Estate 2011 Riesling Reserve, NK'Mip Cellars 2010 Merlot, Sumac Ridge Estate Winery 2007 Steller's Jay Brut Sparkling, and Paradise Ranch Wines 2011 Cabernet France Icewine.

The meal will be rounded off with a selection of Canadian desserts as well as a sampling of award-winning Thai-Canadian Doi Chaang coffees.

The dinner is priced at 5,500 baht net per person. For reservations, call 02-650-8800 or email fb.bangkok@-lemeridien.com.

An in-store Canadian food promotion is also being organised from Aug 6 to 15 at The Mall Group's Gourmet Markets (including Siam Paragon, Emporium, K Village, Terminal 21 and Home Fresh Mart outlets). Featured products will include fresh cherries, blueberries, Canadian seafood (Arctic char, oysters, sockeye salmon, king crab, halibut, etc), maple syrup and various jams. In addition to the Canadian products being showcased, the talented chefs at Gourmet Market deli counters will be unveiling recipes they have created especially for this event.

To tie in with the above events, the Canadian embassy also invites you to enter a contest with a chance of winning the very latest Blackberry model to hit the market, the Z10. Contest conditions and other details can be found on www.facebook.com/CanadianThailand.
