LF Asia plans expansion amid economic slowdown

LF Asia (Thailand), a subsidiary of Hong Kong's Li & Fung Ltd, is bullish about expansion this year despite the slowing economy.

Mario Salvatori, the senior vice-president for licensed brand marketing and distribution in Thailand and Indochina, said the company has introduced two new watch brands - Braun from Germany and Ingersoll from the US.

"Though the country's economy is slowing, all business categories we operate in Thailand still have opportunity to grow, particularly the watch business," he said.

LF Asia distributes 10 watch brands including Timex, Go Girl Only, Cosmopolitan, Jeep, Marc Ecko, Nautica, Versus and Cover.

In the first six months of this year, its watch sales in Thailand grew by 30%, higher than its usual annual growth of about 20%.

The first-half watch performance was better than expected thanks to three elements.

LF Asia offers watches in a price range of 1,000 to 10,000 baht, which makes them accessible to many customers.

Second, the emergence of shopping malls offering a pleasant retail experience has helped to boost spending.

Finally, the increase in foreign tourist numbers, particularly from China, has benefited its watch business, as many enjoy shopping in Thailand, Mr Salvatori said.

Pisan Tarapatr, LF Asia's vice-president for distribution, said the company will expand its watch business, increasing distribution channels for the two new brands to cover more than 30 outlets in the second half of this year.

With the addition of Braun and Ingersoll, the company expects watch sales to grow by 35-40%.

Mr Salvatori did not disclose sales figure but said Thailand is an important regional markets due to huge growth opportunities.

"China and Thailand are among key areas to grow our business in Asia, where growth will more than double this year," he said.
