The Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture released a large number of brown-banded bamboo-sharks into the ocean at Sattahip as part of the ongoing struggle to preserve and protect the environment. A spokesman for the ministry said that there were 63 species of sharks in Thai waters but they were being hunted to extinction because of their popularity in making certain soups. He added that Sattahip was a good place to release the sharks as the area is controlled by the Thai Navy, which means that the valuable marine creatures have a better chance of survival.
