About 40 billion baht has been transferred from overseas to a foundation of the controversial World Peace University (WPU), the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) says.
DSI deputy chief Wannapong Kocharak said Wednesday Pol Lt Col Sakapol Sukpan, head of the DSI's law enforcement support office, led a search of the WPU 2 office located at Media Empire Co in a commercial building in Bang Kapi district.
They found documents relating to the transfer of a 1 billion euro (about 40 billion baht) donation to the organisation's Sattha (Faith) Foundation, Pol Lt Col Wannapong said.
Bank of Thailand (BoT) officials told the DSI that WPU 2 rector Supanat Donchan had once asked the BoT how transfers of such large amounts of money into Thailand could be made, he said.
Pol Lt Col Sakapol has been instructed to ask the BoT and other financial institutions for documents relating to this transfer in order to examine the financial dealings of the foundation and Mr Supanat, Pol Lt Col Wannapong said.
The Office of the Higher Education Commission says the WPU was established illegally and has filed charges against it.
