10 teens rescued from flash flood

PHETCHABUN – A rescue team had to lead 10 teenagers down off a mountain on Tuesday afternoon after they fled from a flash flood at a waterfall in Muang district.

The rescuers spent more than two hours guiding the group of young people to safety.

Pakphoom Pinphrom, 16, one of the victims, said the group arrived at Wang Hin Hor waterfall in tambon Pha Phol in the afternoon. They were enjoying themselves at the site when they suddenly heard the noise of rushing water and a deluge flowed down into the waterfall, so they fled up the mountain.

He said the group was surprised by the flash flood because it had not been raining and there was no sign of any water running down from the forest.

Floods meanwhile hit Wang Sai Poon district of Phichit province on Wednesday after days of continuous heavy rain. The water flowed down from Phetchabun Mountain, submerging around 500 rai of farmland. Wang Sai Poon canal also overflowed, flooding local roads.

Around 58 houses in Sak Lek district were also submerged in water as floods covered 4,000 rai of cultivated land.
