Lao-Chinese TV partnership formed

VIENTIANE - Laos' state-run television monopoly has formed a partnership with China's Yunnan Radio and Television to upgrade its technology and jointly develop content, media reports said Friday.

Under the partnership, Lao National Television will receive an upgraded transmitter from the Yunnan station, allowing it to provide 24-hour broadcasting, the Vientiane Times reported.

"Both sides will cooperate in producing television dramas that reflect their respective customs, culture, ethnicity and lifestyles," said the daily.

Lao National Television currently runs two channels, featuring government-censored programmes that have difficulty competing with channels available from neighbouring Thailand.

Thai soap operas are particularly popular in Laos, which shares the same linguistic roots as Thailand.
