Germany defeats Thai spikers

The Thai women's volleyball team put up a spirited fight but lost in straight sets to Germany at the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix at the Indoor Stadium in Hua Mark on Saturday.

The Germans took the first two sets 25-16 and 25-14 before being pushed hard by the hosts in the final set, which Germany finally won 27-25.

The result left world No. 12 Thailand with nine points after seven matches with one match remaining on Sunday against Russia, which is still contending for a spot in the six-team finals in Japan next month.

Russia won its sixth match in a row with a straight-sets victory over Puerto Rico on Saturday.

Thailand had been seeking a third straight finals appearance in 11 attempts.
