Green tea tycoon hurt in crash

AYUTTHAYA – Tan Passakornnatee, the CEO of Ichitan Group, the country's second-largest green tea producer, was slightly injured in a car accident on Saturday afternoon.

Mr Tan, 54, said he experienced neck pain and a headache after his van ran off the Asian Highway in tambon Klong Suanplu of Phra Nakhon Sri Ayutthaya district.

Nakarin Pimrat, the van's driver, said he saw an 18-wheel truck trying to pass the van at close range and decided to get off the road quickly to avoid a crash.

Mr Tan was taken to a hospital to have his neck pain and headache treated but said he believed the injury was minor. He said he would have a thorough medical check.

He was on his way to Phitsanulok to hand out prizes to winners of a promotional contest but the presentation had to be postponed.

Mr Tan founded the Oishi Group in 1999 and is credited with popularising green tea in Thailand, becoming a baht billionaire in the process.

He sold his remaining interest in Oishi in 2009 to Thai Beverage, headed by liquor billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, but before long he founded a new green-tea venture.
