Police officer gets 50 years for murder

A former Special Branch police officer has been sentenced to life imprisonment for killing two of his own subordinates in 2011.
On Aug 18, 2011 Pol Lt Picharana Kong-in, then deputy inspector attached to Special Branch Division 1, shot dead Pol Snr Sgt Maj Virach Chaiyarat and Pol Cpl Pornthep Damnil behind the Dusit fire station, opposite the special branch office on Setthasiri road in Dusit district, with a handgun.
Pol Lt Picharana confessed to the murder of the two men, pleading mental illness.
The Criminal Court on Monday found him guilty of two counts of murder, each carrying a jail sentence of 33 years and four months. The cumulative jail term is 66 years and eight months.
The court reduced the jail term to 50 years, the maximum, as required by the law.
