Call for THAI board chairman to resign

Call for THAI board chairman to resign

The labour union of Thai Airways International on Tuesday called for the resignation of the airline’s chairman of the board, Ampon Kitiampon, saying he has been appointed to numerous positions by the government which would prevent him giving his full attention to the job.

Mr Ampon, who is also cabinet secretary-general, has been selected as the new chairman of the Bank of Thailand (Bot), pending cabinet approval.

THAI labour union president Jamsri Sukchotirat described the appointment as “inappropriate” as it may adversely affect the administration of THAI. Mr Ampon had already held several official positions assigned by the government.

Ms Jamsri told ttold INN News Agency that Mr Ampon should resign from his role as THAI board chairman so that he could devote his efforts fully to his new job as BoT chairman.

Commenting on the national flag carrier's net loss of 8.4 billion baht in the second quarter, Ms Jamsri said THAI president Sorajak Kasemsuvan should not be the only person to take all the blame. She suggested that all members of the board should resign to show their acceptance of their responsibility and mismanagement.

The board is examining Mr Sorajak’s job performance against the goals that he was set and is expected to announce their decision whether to dismiss him on Friday.

The union members and THAI employees would wait to hear the result and they would call for blanket resignation of board members if Mr Sorajak does not pass the appraisal, Ms Jamsri added.
