Red shirt groups are urging parliament to hurry up and vote on the constitution amendment bill, led by Weng Tochirakarn, Pheu Thai list-MP and core member of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) and lawyer Arkom Rattanapojanart.
The constitution amendment bill seeking to amend Section 291 had been passed by parliament in its first and second readings.
But the parliament vote on the third reading of the bill was stalled, because the Constitution Court suggested a public referendum was required before amending Section 291, which currently states that the constitution can only be amended section-by-section, not in its entirety.
Parliament President Somsak Kiatsuranont has been urged by a number of red shirts to call for a fresh parliament vote on the third reading of the bill, which is seeking to amend Section 291 to allow for the formation of a new constitution drafting assembly.
Mr Weng said the parliament president should go ahead and call for a vote on the bill in its third reading, accusing the Consitution Court of interfering in the work of the legislative branch.
