Parliament resumes charter debate

The joint sitting of parliament has resumed deliberation of a constitution amendment bill on the makeup of the Senate after a tri-partite whips' meeting agreed to allow 57 MPs who had earlier been barred to take part.

Jurin Laksanavisit, the opposition chief whip, said the agreement came after a meeting of the Senate, government and opposition whips on Wednesday morning.

It was agreed that the 57 MPs, who on Tuesday were barred from the debate on the grounds that they failed to accept measures that had been approved in the first reading of the legislation, would be allowed to take part in the debate if they wanted to.

A scuffle among bickering lawmakers on Tuesday marred parliament's debate on constitutional amendments on the first day of a joint sitting.

Mr Jurin argued that lawmakers were not to blame for the problems in parliament on Tuesday. He said Parliament President Somsak Kiatsuranont and his deputy and Senate Speaker Nikhom Wairatpanich should take responsibility for failing to properly perform their duties.
