We have long been familiar with water hyacinth. Our country has plenty of this free-floating perennial aquatic plant that we have cleverly turned into all sorts of items to use around the house.

The ‘Bangkok Otop Runway 2013’ will showcase fabric handbags made from water hyacinth fibre at CentralWorld on Aug 29 at 2pm.

But next week we will see for the first time how this humble plant can be transformed into gorgeous handbags _ and they are totally different from ordinary basketry.

Set for Aug 29 at 2pm at the Eden Zone, 1st floor of CentralWorld, the "Bangkok Otop Runway 2013" will unveil the world's first fabric handbags made from water hyacinth fibre.

Organised in fashion show style by the Community Development Department, Ministry of Interior, the event will exhibit must-have women's accessories including purses, clutches, tote bags, handbags and shoulder bags.

To produce these creations, the water hyacinth is first turned into a textile. Its natural and durable fibre is spun into thread and then woven together to make the fabric, the major component of the bags.

The handbags will be presented by models and celebrities.

The highlighted item is embroidered with three giant Siamese rubies, each of the precious stones weighing more than 20 carats.

This one-of-a-kind charming handbag is worth 300,000 baht and will go under the hammer at the event.

The afternoon also features a demonstration on how to weave water hyacinth fibre and sales of decorative items and premium gifts.
