HP heading to the clouds

Hewlett-Packard Co (HP), the world's largest information technology firm, is gearing up for a push in cloud computing, mobility, security and big data in a bid to serve a new type of IT.

Dhanawat Suthumpun, the managing director of Hewlett-Packard (Thailand), said the strategy is part of its global policy of focusing on growth areas.

HP is transforming itself from a product-centric company to a technology solutions provider by offering end-to-end hardware and software services under the One HP concept.

The California-based firm has set up a local team overseeing the four technology areas to capitalise on growing opportunities. HP is providing cloud-based infrastructure to public and private firms, aimed at reducing IT operating expenses by 30% and speeding up development of online applications.

Mr Dhanawat said HP is in talks with local mobile operators for joint construction of cloud-based infrastructure for e-government projects after a successful collaboration with Singapore Telecommunications.

"We foresee increased investment demand for cloud computing technology in education and the oil and gas sector," he said.

HP provides software for analysing and managing big data, particularly for the retail, airline, telecommunications and banking sectors.

Mr Dhanawat said companies are looking for new IT styles for easy use, agility and lower operating costs instead of the conventional complicated system with higher costs.

He said HP remains optimistic about IT spending in Thailand and expects no delay to new investment projects.

HP is offering leasing and pay-per-use services for customers to ease financial pressure during the economic slowdown.

Globally, HP's software business contributes the lowest revenue to the group, only US$4 billion out of a total of $123 billion.

"But we see increasing growth in the global software market including Thailand," Mr Dhanawat said.

Printers and personal systems generate the group's biggest revenue at $62 billion, followed by IT products for enterprises at $32 billion and enterprise IT services at $25 billion.
