Anti-Thaksin push 'growing'

Ten anti-Thaksin groups have expressed interest in joining a united movement with the Democrat Party, MP Nipit Intarasombat said Monday.

The Democrat said his party is also in contact with several other groups who might be willing to join the anti-government campaign.

When the party feels it has enough groups on board, their respective leaders will be called for talks to work out a strategy, Mr Nipit said, adding the meeting would probably be held before the end of the month.

The anti-government movement would be unprecedented, Mr Nipit said.

However, he noted that the current political situation would have to be assessed before any substantial plans could be laid out.

Anti-Thaksin groups from across the country are being asked to rally their supporters, he added.

Meanwhile, Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said yesterday he respected the decision of People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) leaders to step down from the yellow-shirt group on Friday.

Mr Abhisit said he was grateful for the PAD's past actions.

Echoing earlier comments by the retiring PAD leaders, Mr Abhisit said the group's supporters will now have to decide individually what their next moves would be and which groups they would support.

He stressed that while the Democrats would stand firm against injustice, the party's strategy may be different from that of the PAD.

Mr Abhisit also called for unity among the various anti-Thaksin groups.
