Banharn to woo reform assembly opponents

Chartthaipattana Party chief adviser Banharn Silpa-archa will urge several senior figures to take part in the government's political reform assembly.

Mr Banharn has been appointed by the reform assembly to oversee the work of three committees set up to work on political, economic and social reforms.

He said yesterday he would invite former premier Anand Panyarachun, civic society leader Prawase Wasi, former People's Alliance for Democracy leader Sondhi Limthongkul and key figures of the opposition Democrat Party to the meeting.

Mr Banharn, also a former prime minister, said he had assigned Nikorn Chamnong, a key member of the Chartthaipattana Party, to meet former prime minister Chuan Leekpai and ask him to join the reform assembly.

Last week, Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said he was ready to discuss with Mr Banharn the possibility of joining the political reform assembly.

Mr Abhisit stressed the Democrats had never ruled out the chance of working with others to overcome political divisions.

Mr Abhisit said he would ask Mr Banharn to ensure that certain obstacles which have prevented him from joining the assembly be solved before he decides.

The opposition leader had previously mentioned the controversial amnesty bill, which is now pending consideration by parliament, as one obstacle.

Mr Banharn said yesterday he believed the forum would bridge the country's political divide.

He would try to meet those who disagree with the reform forum.

However, he admitted it would be an uphill task to convince them to join.

Former prime minister Somchai Wongsawat yesterday threw his support behind the reform forum, which he said would be a way out of the country's political divisions.

He praised Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra for coming up with the idea. He said he believed most people backed the move to solve the country's political ills.
