An guru in India was arrested by police on charges of sexually assaulting a teenage girl, officials said on Sunday.
The 16-year-old victim alleged that Asaram Bapu, 72, assaulted her on August 15 at his Jodhpu retreat in the north-western state of Rajasthan.
Bapu was arrested late Saturday night in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, Jodhpur police chief Ajay Pal Lamba said.
A police team was escorting him to Jodhpur where he would be appear before a court later Sunday, Lamba said.
Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot said security had been tightened in the city to prevent protests by his supporters.
Bapu has been involved in several controversies in the past. He was widely criticised for blaming the victim of a December gang rape in New Delhi who later died of severe internal injuries.
