FAT finally schedules presidential poll

The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) has scheduled its presidential election for Oct 17.

FAT acting secretary-general Ong-arj Kosinkha yesterday said the date was agreed by all concerned parties, including the FAT, Fifa and Virach Charnpanich, who will challenge FAT acting president Worawi Makudi in the election.

The election will be overseen by a five-man committee and observed by Fifa representatives, he said.

In an agreement, Virach was allowed to pick three of the five members of the election committee, including the chairman, and Worawi two.

Virach has named Adm Somnuek Sawadthuk as committee chairman and the FAT is checking his qualification, Ong-arj said.

Candidacy has now reopened until Sept 16.

Football fan Pinit Ngarmpring has withdrawn from the election, while it is unclear whether journalist Kasiti Kamalanavin, who originally intended to contest the election, will enter the race.

Kasiti is being sued for defamation by Worawi, who will seek his fourth two-year term as FAT president.
