The ongoing road blockades at two spots in Nakhon Si Thammarat were being backed by a group of politicians using farmers' problems to create government instability, Prompong Nopparit said on Sunday.
Mr Prompong, the spokesman for the ruling Pheu Thai Party, said despite the majority of rubber farmers being satisfied with the government's subsidy of 2,520 baht per rai for rubber farms, some core leaders of the protesters were still insisting on sticking to their demand of 120 baht for a kilogramme of rubber.
The demand was politically motivated because the production cost of a kilogramme of rubber was 60 baht, he said.
Mr Prompong accused a group of unnamed politicians of inciting the rubber farmers to block Highway 41 and that one of the blockades was not far from the house of a politician.
The politicians were using the rubber farmers' problems to undermine the government's stability and take the whole country hostage, he said.
