Ex-banker nabbed with forged currency

Thai and United States authorities have arrested a former bank employee who had in his possession 1,000 forged US$100 banknotes at a house in Bueng Kum district, the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) said on Wednesday.

The suspect was identified as Pisit Ritkulpipat, 67. A currency detector and several documents related to the case were seized as evidence along with the counterfeit money.

The DSI along with US Secret Service investigators apprehended Mr Pisit on Tuesday in a joint sting operation, said DSI deputy chief Pol Lt Col Yanpol Yangyuen.

Mr Pisit was formerly in charge of handling foreign money at an unnamed bank.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Mr Pisit sold a variety of counterfeit currencies and had been doing so for many years.

He confessed that he was a wholesale dealer for the forgery operation but denied being involved with the printing of fake banknotes.

He added that he sold forged bills at a third of the value of genuine banknotes.

Mr Pisit was taken into custody on several charges of counterfeiting.
