Tips on getting a longer, lusher look

SOCIAL & LIFESTYLE

Long, lush lashes are an asset that every woman dreams of, but not many Asian women are blessed with Blythe doll-like peepers. Thankfully, this problem has plagued us ladies long enough for some kind hearts to decide to find the solution. The answers range from simple home remedies and make-up products to totally unnatural solutions such as eyelash extensions.

To possess thick, long and lush lashes, the first thing you need is good genes. If you don't have those, the next best thing is to keep whatever you have been given.

Mascara, long-lasting eye make-up and false eyelashes might help make your eyes look more defined, but they can also damage your lashes. Harsh chemicals can cause the skin around that area to dry, and the eyelashes can be weakened as a result.

The right remover is recommended if you like heavy eye make-up, because it saves you from rubbing out residue, which only damages the skin and the lashes further. One tip is to use olive oil as a make-up remover. It removes stubborn make-up easily and is said to lengthen your lashes when applied and left on overnight. Another option is to use petroleum jelly. Apply it to lashes with a clean mascara wand to moisturise and help them to appear thicker and healthier.

Today, there are many eyelash lengthening and volumising products available. There are serums and conditioners that promise you longer and fuller eyelashes. Read some reviews before you buy, because it seems like not all of them live up to the claims, and some come with side effects such as darkened skin.

The most popular way to lengthen the lashes instantly is to use mascara. There are thousands of mascaras available today, and the best bet is to try, try and try until you find one that works for you. Remember that you cannot make your lashes look full and flirty by applying four coats - the lashes will just look unnatural like spider legs. A coat or two should suffice.

If you have extremely thin and short lashes and want to have long ones, fake it. Use false eyelashes to create that doll-eye effect. Choosing the right glue is as important as choosing the right lashes. You don't want half of it to come off during the day. If you're wearing false eyelashes, always carry the glue with you just in case.

If you have some lashes but want to put on falsies, don't forget to curl both your real lashes and the false ones to make them blend. Curl them when the glue has completely dried. Using a hair dryer to blow the lash curler and heat it up can also help the real lashes stay curled longer.

Another way to make your lashes appear thicker is to use an eyeliner in the same colour as your real lashes. Draw a very thin line and fill out any gap to make your lashes appear fuller. When it comes to filling eyelash gaps, felt-tip eyeliner or pencil eyeliner would be a better choice than liquid eyeliner, which is harder to control.

Beyond the call of beauty

Most skincare products claiming 24-hour hydration are never exposed to real environmental elements to prove their all-day endurance. To test the performance of its iconic Ultra Facial Cream, Kiehl's partnered with adventure explorer and polar guide Doug Stoup, on his recent expedition to the North Pole in the Arctic Ocean. Stoup was very pleased with the hydration of his skin in the extremely cold and dry climate. ''This product really works and I depend on it to provide 24 hours of continuous hydration. Now I take this along for the ride and my skin feels so much healthier and hydrated, the whole day. I've definitely had to share a jar or two with my crew.'' However, don't just believe the hype.
