Incentives for exports planned

The government is preparing to launch a myriad of roadshows and measures to stimulate exports for 20 target sectors for the remainder of this year.

The measures include trade roadshows and exhibitions both in Thailand and overseas, business match-making events and expansion of product distribution centres abroad, said a Commerce Ministry source.

The ministry will also invite foreign buyers to negotiate trade deals with exporters in Thailand.

The 20 sectors are cars and parts, computers and parts, gems and jewellery, rubber, steel, machinery, integrated circuits, air conditioners, canned food, rice, sugar, tapioca, petroleum products, vegetables and frozen fruit, frozen chicken, electronics, television sets, lifestyle products, printing and packaging, and construction materials.

Those sectors represent up to 68% of the country's exports. For the first seven months, they brought in US$89.56 billion in export revenue, down 0.96% from the same period last year.

Last year, those sectors fetched $158.36 billion, a rise of 5% from 2011.

Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Niwatthamrong Bunsongphaisan recently met the directors of 62 Thai trade centres worldwide and reiterated the government's call for these officials to help work out new export strategies,

The ministry will meet again with the trade centres today to re-evaluate export trends for the rest of this year and 2014.

After that, it will call a meeting with the Industry, Agriculture and Tourism and Sports ministries to discuss how to boost exports and raise revenue from the service sector.
