Smokey gets in your eyes

There's more to smokey eyes than just eyeshadow

SOCIAL & LIFESTYLE

Smokey eyes are no longer a trend but a classic look that makes every woman's eyes stand out. It's a look that fits every occasion, as it can be sexy, glamorous, bold or dramatic, depending on the colours and the technique used.

Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Kajal Liner is formulated with Palm Kernel and Japanese Fruit Wax, along with a high concentration of pigment to create a creamy, blendable kajal paste.

When talking about smokey eyes, most people associate them with dark eyeshadow. While dark eyeshadows are a great tool for creating a smokey look, they can't work alone. To create a perfectly sexy smokey effect, the right lashes and eyeliner also play a vital part.

"This season's smokey eyes are all about mega lashes and richly-pigmented liner," said Bobbi Brown about the sultry yet sophisticated look.

For smokin' hot smokey eyes, pair jet-black volumising mascara with a highly-pigmented eyeliner along the inner rim of the eye. Creamy, blendable eyeliner is great for smokey eyes as it can be smudged to deliver intense definition and allow for versatility in application.

The idea is to make the eyes sultry and smokey, not to create a black eye effect or plunge into panda territory. The key is to blend darker shades with lighter ones, and it doesn't have to be all greyscale. Play with different colours - chocolate, silver or deep purple. Use a dark colour close to the lash line and a lighter colour above the crease, and blend using a brush, a cotton bud or your finger in an upward and outward motion.

Intensify the look with black eyeliner. To make the line blend well with the eyeshadow, apply black powder shadow over the liner. Curl and coat your lashes with the right mascara, and you're good to go. For an evening look, add a touch of sparkly silver or pearl eyeshadow in the inner corners.

You can create a new twist on smokey by using a navy or purple liner and eyeshadow in a similar shade. The lashes, however, should always remain black or dark brown.

The right lip colours to complement smokey eyes are either soft colours like pale pink or nude, or extremely vibrant ones like bright red. Also consider whether the eye-lip colour combo is right. Purple eyes go with pink lips, but not blood-red. Chocolate eyes are complemented by coral lips. Black eyes are intensified with cherry red lip colour.

To make the eyes pop even more, defining your eyebrows makes a big difference. The smokey eye make-up will draw attention to your eyes, so make sure your eyebrows are well-shaped and correctly coloured. Full, defined eyebrows frame the smokey eye look best, but don't go overboard or they will look chunky and make the whole look a bit messy.

MACExtended Play Lash in Gigablack creates intense lashes with dramatic definition, high volume and a wide reach, lasting up to 16 hours.

Nars Single Eyeshadow in Namibia gives a matte grey moon colour which complements an intense smokey look.

Stretching lashes to new heights, Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara accentuates the eyes with more depth and intensity.

Helping hands

Keeping your hands germ-free usually means drying your hands simultaneously, as frequent washing or alcohol-based hand sanitisers can deplete natural moisture in the skin. Wave goodbye to that dilemma with Burt’s Bees Aloe & Witch hazel Hand Sanitizer, a sanitising spray that contains aloe vera and witch hazel extracts to keep the hands clean and moisturised at the same time. The all-natural sanitiser eliminates 99.99% of germs without water, while nourishing the skin. The handy bottle makes it convenient to stay clean on the go.

Utterly uplifting

Chanel introduces a new anti-ageing skincare product — Le Lift. Aware that ageing depends on the whims of hereditary and external stress factors, Chanel Research has shed light on the impact of these factors on the skin’s youth proteins. After years of research, Chanel has developed an active ingredient capable of giving the skin means to restore its own natural balance and to rejuvenate on its own. Skin tissue is rewoven day after day, and wrinkles are smoothed while the facial contour is redefined.
