The general assembly of the Supreme Court judges on Monday voted to nominate Supachai Somcharoen to be a new member of the Election Commission.
The term of the current EC has expired, necessitating the selection of five new members to sit on it.
The general assembly of the Supreme Court judges is required by the constitution to select two of the EC members.
In today's meeting of 136 Supreme Court judges, Mr Supachai, a former chief justice of the Region 1 Appeals Court, was the only applicant selected by more than one half of the judges.
None of other applicants received votes from more than one half of existing judges, as required by the law.
The general assembly of the Supreme Court judges will hold another meeting on Oct 9 to select another nominee.
The other three EC members are to be nominated by a selection committee of seven members.
The seven members comprise the president of the Supreme Court, the president of the Constitution Court, the president of the Supreme Administrative Court, the speaker of the House of Representatives, the leader of the opposition, one person elected by the general assembly of the Supreme Court judges, and one person elected by the general assembly of the Supreme Administrative Court judges.
All five nominees in the two categories must be endorsed by the Senate and then by the King.
EC members serve seven year terms. They are only permitted to serve for one term each.
